The Basics

  • Group stage / knockout stage format
  • 6 groups
    • Top 12 seeded, S-curve style
    • Remainder drawn
  • 8-team knockout
  • Teams in the knockout for the championship:
    • Group Winners
    • 2 best 2nd place teams
  • Remaining teams play full-length consolation games for ranking placement

Knockout Stage

  • Teams selected into 4-team brackets
  • Selection done based on the formula described at the end of this presentation
  • The team coming in 5th in the Red group set aside for the time being
Top 8 Win Win Win Win
Top 8 2nd 2 2nd 1 Win Win
2nd Four 2nd 2nd 2nd 2nd
3rd Four 3rd 4 3rd 3 3rd 2 3rd 1
4th Four 4th 2 4th 1 3rd 6 3rd 5
5th Four 4th 4th 4th 4th
  • Top 2 four team brackets (labelled Top 8 above) go to knockout for the championship
  • All teams at this stage have a 3 game guarantee
  • 2nd place teams may be switched if necessary to avoid a rematch of a group stage game

  • 1 game guarantee, against a similarly-skilled team
  • Winners get a 2nd game
  • 1 lucky team in the bottom tier having lost their first game will face off against the 5th place team in the red group

Best 2nd place team?

To make this schedule work, we are required to rank teams that finished in the same places in each group against each other across all groups

That is, we need a top-to-bottom ranking of all six 2nd place teams, a top-to-bottom ranking of all six 3rd place teams, etc.

Each of these rankings to be done in this order:

  1. Points difference, neglecting the worst loss
  2. 2016 Final Ranking
New teams assigned a ranking of 21
  3. Coin Flip
Only necessary should two new teams need to be split in rankings

Why points difference neglecting the worst loss? Prevents being drawn against a very good seeded team from ruining chances at a good ranking for the knockout stages

Although this is a somewhat complicated calculation, these rankings will be calculated publicly on the website, and on display somewhere convenient in the venue, from the end of the last game on Thursday

The Draw

As we did for Calgary, we’ll be doing the draw live at MRDA Champs

This time, we’ll be doing it at the champs in Wales, on 15 Oct 2017, just before either the final game or the 3rd-place game

The group stage schedule will be published several weeks after the draw

We will follow this procedure:

  1. Moving from Red to Purple and back, seed the top 12 teams into the groups following an S-curve
  2. Place the host nation, Spain, in the Red group
  3. Divide remaining teams between Europe (E) and Rest-Of-World (RoW)
  4. Moving from Red to Purple:
    1. If a group has two seeded European teams, draw one from RoW
    2. If a group has two seeded non-European teams, draw one from E
    3. If a group has one of each, draw one from RoW
  5. Mix all remaining undrawn teams together
  6. Moving from Red to Purple, draw one into each group
